My book (2025, Routledge) considers the changing fortunes of psychoanalysis in Soviet Russia from 1930 to 1980 and is available for download or paper copy via Routledge website.

Approaching social history in a psychoanalytic key, it argues that the growing split between official and informal languages of the time produced multiple strategies to keep alive the conversation around prohibited subjects. Through original archival research on figures such as Bluma Zeigarnik, Alexander Luria, Filipp Bassin and Dmitry Uznadze, van Munsteren offers a more nuanced understanding of Soviet studies of the unconscious and the role of language in the formation of the mind and in mental disturbances. This book makes a significant contribution to the historiography of psychoanalysis and to the study of the cultural influence of psychoanalysis and its interdisciplinary engagements.

My theoretical interests are linked to the metapsychology of Freud, Melanie Klein, and especially her ‘Return to Freud’. Currently, I am researching minor histories of psychoanalysis, the history of the Ambulatorium in Vienna, and the Communist Period in Hungary.

I am a co-editor of the volume Michael Balint for Our Times: The London Years, together with Raluca Soreanu and Judit Szekacs, as well as co-editor of the Important Little Book in Psychoanalysis series with 1968 Press.

I’ve translated from English into Russian papers by psychoanalysts and psychoanalytic theorists such as Mladen Dolar, Sergio Benvenuto, Elvio Fachinelli, John Forrester, and Lisa Appinganesi. I co-edited the Russian translation of the book Perversions by Sergio Benvenuto and The Double by Otto Rank. 

For eight years, I was editor-in-chief of the online journal Lacanalia, dedicated to Freudian and Lacanian thought. I am the author of the afterword papers for Volume 8 and Volume 12 and the preface for Volume 9 of the New Edition of Full Collection of Works of Sigmund Freud (in Russian).
