In this seminar, Lizaveta van Munsteren will present her book, The Vicissitudes of Psychoanalysis in Soviet Russia, 1930-1980 (2025), which considers the changing fortunes of psychoanalysis in Soviet Russia. The book offers new readings of figures such as Bluma Zeigarnik, Alexander Luria, Filipp Bassin and Dmitry Uznadze, and presents a nuanced understanding of Soviet studies of the unconscious and the role of language in the formation of the mind and in mental disturbances. The book presentation will be followed by a conversation with Norman Gabriel about childhood development and the influence of Soviet figures on debates and practices in psychoanalysis today.

Open to psychotherapy trainees, students, and practitioners, this group offers a reflective space to deepen your understanding of foundational psychoanalytic ideas and consider their ongoing significance in the consulting room.
